California
(Pa.) Drops FPC, 74-69
Rodgerson/Scott Named to All-Tourney
Team; Scott logs double-double in loss
CALIFORNIA, Pa.
(December 29, 2001) - Franklin Pierce University
rallied
late, but the comeback fell short as host California University
of Pennsylvania (10-1) posted a 74-69 victory in the Championship
game of the Fourth Annual Holiday Inn/Food for the Hungry
Tournament in Hamer Hall tonight.
After FP
and California
entered halftime at a 35-35 deadlock, the host Vulcans took
a six-point lead (55-49) with an 11-4 run midway through
the second half. Junior Ishmieal Kamara kick-started the
run with four points.
FP
trimmed the gap
to three points (61-58) after a Kevin Scott (Mississauga,
Ontario/Iona Catholic) jumper with 4:19 to play,
but that would be as close as the Ravens would get.
California scored
six-straight points - four by junior forward Tom Frederick
- to take its largest lead of the game (67-58) with 2:25
on the clock.
FP
closed to within
four points (69-65) with 55-seconds to play as junior Tom
Waterman (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) led a 7-2 run with
four points. However, a pair of technical fouls on senior
Alfonso Payne (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin Academy)
spelled doom for the Ravens as the Vulcans lead expanded
back to nine (74-65) with 28-seconds on the clock as Kamara
drained two-of-four at the line.
Kamara, who earned
Tournament MVP honors, led California with a game-high 30
points in 28 minutes of action off the bench. He hit 8-of-10
from the field, including 4-6 from three-point range, and
10-14 from the line.
Frederick, also named
to the All-Tournament team, and sophomore Gerrmar Ballard
each chipped in with ten points.
Scott and sophomore
Derek Rodgerson (Newburgh, Maine/Hampden Academy)
were both named to the All-Tournament team for the Ravens.
Scott notched a double-double to lead the Ravens with 18
points and a game-best ten rebounds. Rodgerson followed
up a 17-point performance the night before with 15 points.
Junior V.J.
Kwity (Torrance, Calif./West) chipped in 13 points,
five rebounds and five assists, while Waterman added 12
points, three assists and two steals.
The game was clearly
won at the foul line as California connected just nine times
from the field (compared to 11 field goals for FPC) in the
closing 20-minutes, but enjoyed a 19-10 scoring advantage
at the charity stripe while being whistled for just 14 personal
fouls on the night.
FP
(5-5, 2-4 NE-10)
returns home to begin a rigorous Conference slate in the
month of January with a match-up against Pace University
on Thursday, January 3, at 7:30 p.m. The game begins a three-game
homestand prior to a four-game road trip to begin the new
year.
