CLARION, Pa. (November
17, 2001) - Franklin Pierce University
men's basketball
team claimed first place in the KFC/Subway Classic in Clarion,
Pa. with an 86-73 win over #18 Clarion College this evening.
FP
made an early
run at the Golden Eagles, as Kevin Scott (Mississauga,
Ontario/Iona Catholic) helped the Ravens take a
ten-point lead scoring eight points just eight minutes after
tip-off.
Ravens took a commanding
19-point lead at the 2:12 mark of the first before squandering
it away after Clarion made a 14-4 run three minutes into
the second half to come within two. FP
worked to rebuild a seven-point lead, however, the Golden
Eagles cut the Ravens' lead to one point with 8:20 left
in regulation.
Junior guard Tom
Waterman (Bangor, Maine/Bangor/Maine) pulled the
Ravens out of the bind, as he tallied ten points in the
final seven minutes to put the Ravens back up by 16.
Sophomore Derek
Rodgerson (Newburgh, Maine/Hampden Academy) led
all scorers with 25 points. This evening's performance,
coupled with his 18-point performance the previous night
against #13 Longwood earned him tournament MVP honors.
Waterman followed
with 16 points and 11 assists, and earned a spot on the
All-Tournament team with teammate Kevin Scott. Scott scored
15 points on 6-8 shooting from the floor and 3-4 from the
line, and pulled down 11 rebounds for his first double-double
of the season.
The Ravens (2-0) return
to action on Tuesday, November 20, when they travel to the
College of the Saint Rose in their Northeast-10 Conference
opener at 7:45 p.m.
