Franklin
Pierce RINDGE,
N.H. (January 2, 2006) – Franklin
Pierce dominated the glass in collecting a 62-61 upset of Pace
University in Northeast-10 Conference men’s basketball action at the
Franklin Pierce Fieldhouse tonight. Franklin
Pierce out-rebounded Pace 48-30 for the contest, including 21-18 on
its own offensive end of the floor. The Ravens also hit 42.6-percent
(26-61) of their shots from the floor, compared to 35.5% (22-62)
shooting for the Setters. Junior forward Sean Mayo (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) led the rebounding effort with a career-best 13 boards, including a career-high eight on the offensive end, while senior Justin Powell (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) snared eight boards and junior Darryl Minnifield (Boston, Mass./Brookline) grabbed seven. Powell also added ten points and two assists, while Mayo registered seven points, two blocks and two steals.
Senior
Pierre Sully (Jamaica Plain, Mass./North Cambridge) led
all scorers with 15 points (11 first half) to go with six rebounds
(three offensive) and three assists, while freshman Timothy
Munch (Blauvelt, N.Y./Storm King Prep) added 13 points (eight
second half). Senior
Neal Wellington (Wheaton, Md./Good Councel) led Pace
with 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Sophomore Desmond Quincy-Jones (Rye, N.Y./Rye) nearly
notched a double double, finishing with nine points and a team-best
nine rebounds to go with two blocks. Sophomores Ryan Williams
(Centreville, Va./Paul VI) and Gibralter White (Gautier,
Miss./Gautier) each chipped in 11 points and three steals. Minnifield
converted a conventional three-point play (his only points of the
night) to give Franklin Pierce a four-point lead (58-54) with 3:08 to
play. After a pair of Pace free throws, each team missed on their next
three possessions. The Ravens appeared to seal things when Mayo
grabbed a rebound off a Munch miss at the line and scored to put them
back up four (62-58) with ten seconds left. However,
Wellington drove to the other end and buried a three-pointer to pull
Pace within a point (62-61) with three-seconds to play. The Setters
fouled, but Minnifield grabbed his own rebound, off the miss on the
front-end of a one-and-one, to wrap the win up. Franklin Pierce (5-5, 2-3 NE-10) returns to action on Thursday when it visits Le Moyne College at 7:30 p.m. Pace (7-5, 4-3 NE-10) visits the College of Saint Rose on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. |
