Pace Squeezes by Franklin Pierce, 6-3
Ravens’ Gardella is the lone player to play and win two matches on the day

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (April 4, 2008) Franklin Pierce University suffered a 6-3 defeat to Pace University in Northeast-10 Conference men’s tennis action on Friday afternoon in East Hartford, Conn.

Senior Austin Gardella (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) was the only person from either team to play and win two matches on the afternoon, winning at first singles and first doubles. Gardella teamed with freshman Adit Phataraprasit (Bangkok, Thailand/Millfield School (U.K.)) to take a 8-6 victory at first doubles, then the senior did not lose a game in a 6-0, 6-0 first-singles triumph over Garret Boyd (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East).

Freshman Max Logan (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) earned the only other victory for Franklin Pierce, taking a 6-4, 6-3 match from Jose Caceres (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) at fourth singles.

Andrew Hagen (Middle Village, N.Y./Holy Cross) was credited with two wins for the Setters, as he teamed with Boyd for an 8-5 win at second doubles over Logan and junior Roland Oganyan (Watertown, Mass./Watertown). Hagen also earned a default victory at sixth singles when the Ravens could not field an opponent.

Neil Mirchandani (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) and Dan Klein (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan) also earned important singles victories for Pace, with Mirchandani sweeping Oganyan, 6-0, 6-0, at second singles and Klein defeating Phataraprasit at third singles, 6-2, 6-0.

Franklin Pierce (2-7, 2-7 NE-10) will complete its 2007-08 season on Sunday afternoon, when the Ravens travel to Manchester, N.H., to take on Saint Anselm College at 1 p.m. Pace (5-7, 4-4 NE-10) travels to Saint Michael’s College on Sunday afternoon.
