Franklin
Pierce Inducts Arman and 1994 Women’s Soccer Team RINDGE,
N.H. (October 18, 2002) –
Franklin Pierce inducted its first National Championship team as well as
one of the hardest working members of its athletic department into its
Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday night. The induction was part of the
Evening of Excellence Ceremony at the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Activity Center
at Northfields during the College’s Alumni Weekend Festivities.
Inducted were Assistant Athletic Director and Head Athletic
Trainer Cynthia Arman as well as the 1994 NCAA
Division II Champion women’s soccer team. Arman has served the College in a variety of roles since joining the Franklin Pierce athletic department in August of 1985. Whether it be as Head Softball Coach (1986-1990), Compliance Coordinator and Head Athletic Trainer, her hard work and dedication has not gone unnoticed by her colleagues at the College or around the Northeast and the country.
Throughout
her career, Arman has not only displayed all the characteristics of a
winner, but has shared those traits with those who have worked with her.
She is someone with exemplary work ethic, dedication to serving,
dedicated to her profession and respected by all.
“Cindy is a deserving entry into the Franklin Pierce Athletics
Hall of Fame,” stated Franklin Pierce Vice President and Director of
Athletics Bruce Kirsh during the induction ceremony.
“Without her hard work and dedication, many of our current and future
Hall of Fame student-athletes wouldn’t be there.”
The 1994 Franklin Pierce women’s soccer team kicked-off a
dynasty in Division II that has been unparalleled at this level. The
Ravens posted a 19-0 record which started a 40-match winning streak that
ranks second in Division II history to this day, outscored their
opposition by a 114-3 margin and yielded just 30 shots all season (1.58
shots per match).
The team claimed the first National Championship in Franklin
Pierce history as it posted a 2-0 victory over Regis College of Colorado
in front of a Division II Championship record 2,500 fans at Crystal
Field in Rindge. Sophomore Nathalie Geeris was named the Most Outstanding offensive player at the Championship as she led the Ravens with four points. Junior Karolina Divert was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player and they were joined on the All-Tournament team by junior captain Ewa Bergsten, sophomore Susanne Bergstrom and junior Petra Lostelius. That season, the
Ravens coasted to their first of six New England Collegiate Conference
titles with a 6-0 mark, outscoring the Conference opposition by a 27-0
margin. Senior goalkeeper Jeanette Smith set a Division II record with a
0.12 goals against average, yielding just two goals in 1,505 minutes.
Her 14 shutouts that season matched a program record. Six Ravens
totaled 20 or more points that season, led by Nathalie Geeris’ 77
points on 27 goals and 23 assists to earn Division II Player of the Year
honors. Susanne Bergstrom was second on the team with 51 points, scoring
19 goals and dishing 13 assists. while junior Amy Hanlon finished with
15 goals and eight assists for 38 points. Nathalie Geeris,
Petra Lostelius and Susanne Bergstrom all earned All-America honors. Six
Ravens earned All-Northeast honors, five earned All-New England honors,
while seven earned All-Conference selections. Head Coach Mark Krikorian
was named NECC Coach of the Year. The team joins
Bergsten (Class of 2000) and Krikorian (Class of 2002) as members of the
Franklin Pierce Athletics Hall of Fame. Team
