Season Opener to Mansfield, 1-0
RINDGE, N.H. (Sept.
3, 2001) - The Franklin Pierce University
Women's field
hockey team suffered a 1-0 shutout in their 2001 season
opener at Winchendon School this afternoon.
The teams played 60
minutes of scoreless field hockey before Mansfield forward,
Gretchen Reschke, slipped the ball in the right hand corner
of the net and past netminder Kasey McClements (Ashland,
Mass./Ashland).
The Mountaineers dominated
in the first half, as they peppered starting goaltender,
Irene Smith (Olivebridge, N.Y./Onteora),
with several quality shots. Smith fought off the Mansfield
offense however, and made eleven saves in the first half.
The Ravens' offense
picked up in the second half and generated some excellent
chances, but couldn't slip the ball past Mansfield goalkeeper,
Heather Long. McClements was excellent in the second half,
as she made nine saves for the Ravens.
The Ravens return
to action on Saturday, September 8, when they face Shippensburg
University at Stonehill College at 2:30 p.m.
