Henrique scores her first collegiate goal for the Ravens in the 10th minute

MANCHESTER, N.H. (September 24, 2007) – The Franklin Pierce University field hockey team battled yet another opponent through 70 minutes, but the Ravens came up just short in a 2-1 loss to Saint Anselm College in a Northeast-10 Conference field hockey match on Monday evening at the South Athletic Fields.

Freshman forward Nicole Henrique (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case) scored her first collegiate goal at 9:12 of the first half to tie the score after Sam Rowe (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) had given the Hawks a 1-0 lead 5:25 into the match. The goal came off of a Raven penalty corner, with the assist given to junior defender Stephanie Howard (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk). The tally made Henrique the fourth Raven freshman to score her first collegiate goal in the first 11 games of the year.

Neither goaltender was very busy on the day, with Raven freshman Tevis Hannington (Canton, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) making one save on three shots on goal. Hawks goalie Riley Haddock (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) was forced to make two saves on three shots.

Freshman Tevis Hannington made one save in Monday's match against Saint Anselm.

The Ravens played well in the opening 35 minutes, holding a slight 4-3 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in penalty corners.

The team held the Hawks to three shots and only one shot on goal in the second half, but unfortunately for the Ravens that shot found the back of the net. At the 41:11 mark, Michele Baca (Franklin, N.H./Franklin) took a pass from Rowe and beat Hannington for the game-winning goal.

Franklin Pierce nearly tied the game at the 59:07 mark, but Saint Anselm’s Sara Griffin (Derry, N.H./ Pinkerton Academy) made a defensive save on a shot by Raven senior Alison Daday (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) to preserve the lead. Daday’s shot was the last recorded by the Ravens on the day.

Franklin Pierce (0-11, 0-8 NE-10) will return home to Sodexho Field on Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. matchup against conference opponent UMass Lowell. Saint Anselm (3-5, 3-4 NE-10) takes on Bentley on Wednesday in Manchester, N.H.
