Pierce junior All-American Garrett
Olson (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills)
was named the Northeast-10 Conference’s Baseball Player of the Week
today.
Olson, who earns Player of the Week honors for the first time
this season (fourth career), led the Ravens to a doubleheader sweep of
Queens College on Saturday in their lone action of the week. He was a
combined 6-for-10 (.600) with eight runs scored, four stolen bases,
three home runs (two grand slams), a double and 12 RBI over the two
games. Olson
became just the tenth player in Division II history to hit a record
two grand slams in one game (first since 2001) in the Ravens 20-5 win
in game two of the doubleheader. He finished the game with a
school-record ten RBI, becoming just the 22nd player in
NCAA Division II history with ten or more RBI in a game (first since
2003) - three shy of the DII record. He finished a game 4-for-5 with
five runs scored, a walk and two steals in the nightcap after hitting
2-5 with a double, homer, three runs scored, two steals and two RBI in
game one.
Olson,
named the Preseason Division II Player of the Year by Baseball
America, is batting .405 (15-of-37) with 13 runs scored, two
doubles, a team-best five home runs and team-high 19 RBI through the
Ravens first nine games. He is slugging .865 to go with a .488 on-base
percentage from the leadoff spot. Olson, Baseball America’s
95th rated pro prospect in all of college baseball this
spring, is 4-for-5 (.800) with the bases loaded this season and has
reached base 57.1-percent (8-of-18) of his opportunities when leading
off an inning. He leads the team with five multiple-RBI games and is
tied for second with five multi-hit outings. Olson
ranks among career leaders at the College in numerous categories. He
is fifth all-time with 19 home runs and 32 stolen bases, ninth with
110 runs scored and 11th with 155 hits. Olson has also been
hit by a school-record 26 pitches in 110 career games played. Franklin Pierce (8-1, 0-0 NE-10), winners of eight-straight and off to its best start in program history, returns to action this weekend when it kicks off its annual spring break trip with a doubleheader against Molloy College at Jack Russell Stadium, spring training home to the Philadelphia Phillies, in Clearwater, Fla., on Saturday at noon. The Ravens are ranked ninth in this week’s Collegiate Baseball magazine Division II coaches’ poll, marking just the second time in program history they have cracked the top ten and the first time during the regular season. |
