Stonehill
Turns Back EASTON,
Mass. (April 2, 2006) –
Stonehill College handed Franklin Pierce, ranked 11th in
this week’s Collegiate Baseball magazine Division II poll,
two-straight losses for the first time this season with a 3-2 setback
in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at Lou Gorman Field this
afternoon.
Sophomore right-hander Andy
Hillier (Hanover, Mass./Hanover)
held the Northeast-10’s top offense to just two runs, one earned, on
five hits with eight strikeouts and a walk over eight plus innings of
work to pick up his second win of the season (2-2). Senior Joe
Breen (Swampscott, Mass./Swampscott)
came in and got the final three outs after the first two Franklin
Pierce batters had reached to nail down his second save in as many
games.
Junior Max
Vigliotti (Stamford, Conn./Cheshire Academy)
led the Skyhawks offense as he hit 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Senior Coley
Lyons (West Roxbury, Mass./Catholic Memorial)
was 2-3 with a run scored, while senior T.J.
Piscatelli (Norfolk, Mass./Xavarian)
and junior Adam
Pardo (Hanover, Mass./Hanover)
were both 1-3 with a run scored.
Senior All-American Bryan
Duplissie (East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock Regional)
led Franklin Pierce as he hit 2-for-4 with a double, stolen base and
two RBI. Senior Elliott
Shea (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant)
was 1-3 with a double and two runs scored. Junior right-hander Nate Berberian (Northborough, Mass./Northborough) suffered the loss (1-1) as he allowed two earned runs on three hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings of relief for the Ravens. Senior Tyler Cummings (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) started for Franklin Pierce, allowing an earned run on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks over the first 3.1 innings. He missed his second-straight chance to become the program’s all-time win leader as he remains tied with Chris Shank and Jon White atop Franklin Pierce’s career win list with a 20-12 career mark.
Franklin
Pierce opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the first,
marking the 18th time in 24 games this season the Ravens
have scored in their first at bat. Shea reached with a one-out double
and scored two batters later on a two-out single by Duplissie.
Stonehill knotted the score in the fourth as Piscatelli was hit
by a Cummings pitch with one out and later scored when sophomore Ryan
Halloran (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro)
welcomed Berberian into the game by drawing a bases loaded walk. The
Ravens escaped further damage as Stonehill’s next batter grounded
into a double play, aided by an interference call.
The Skyhawks took the lead in the fifth as Pardo led off with a
single, reached third on a Lyons single and scored on a fielder’s
choice. Stonehill added an insurance run in the seventh after
Berberian retired the first two batters. Lyons was hit by a pitch
before scoring on Vigliotti’s double to right center.
Franklin Pierce threatened in the ninth as Shea walked and
reached second on a passed ball. Senior Mike
Chambers (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry)
singled to put runners on the corners and chase Hillier. Shea scored
on a fielder’s choice, before the game ended when junior Kim
Hart (Gorham, Maine/Gorham)
popped to the shortstop on an attempted hit and run, resulting in an
easy double play. Franklin Pierce (17-7, 2-3 NE-10) looks to get back on track on Tuesday when it visits Bryant University at 3:30 p.m. Stonehill (11-10, 7-2 NE-10) visits Merrimack College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. |
