#13/16
Franklin Pierce MANCHESTER,
N.H. (April 25, 2006) –
Franklin Pierce, ranked 13th in this week’s National
Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll and 16th
in this week’s Collegiate Baseball magazine Division II poll,
won its program record 33rd game of the year with a 3-0
victory over Saint Anselm College at Sullivan Park this afternoon.
Franklin Pierce,
in addition to establishing a new single-season win record, has won
four-straight (three-straight shutouts), 11 of 12 and 16 of 18 with
today’s victory. The Ravens pitching staff has not allowed a run
over their last 30 innings of work, with five of their last seven wins
coming by way of shutout. Junior right-hander Shane Presutti (Southbridge, Mass./Southbridge) picked up his second-straight shutout victory to earn his eighth win of the season (8-0). Presutti scattered three hits over his complete-game effort this afternoon and set a new program record for consecutive shutout innings with 18, surpassing Keith Brouillard’s mark of 17.2 shutout innings set in 2004, which was matched by senior Tyler Cummings (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) earlier this season. Presutti also finished the contest with ten strikeouts, marking his third double-digit strikeout performance of the season, and just two walks.
Senior
Mike Chambers (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) hit
2-for-5 for the Ravens with a stolen base and an RBI. Junior Kim
Hart (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) was 2-3 with a pair of stolen
bases, while senior Elliot Shea (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant)
and junior Vinny Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty)
were both 2-4 with a run scored. Pennell also stole two bases, while
Shea stole his Conference-leading 24th base of the season
to match Pennell’s single-season record set last spring.
Senior Ryan Call (Hopkinton, Mass.) and junior Wayne
MacKay (Melrose, Mass.) both hit 1-for-3 to lead Saint Anselm.
Junior left-hander Jeff Keefe (Cambridge, Mass.)
suffered the loss (1-6) on the mound for the Hawks, yielding three
earned runs on ten hits with two walks and no strikeouts in a complete
game effort.
Franklin Pierce got on the board with a run in the third as
senior Randy Fenton (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) led off
with a single down the right field line, reached second on a sacrifice
and scored on a Chambers single down the leftfield line. Pennell stole
home to score the Ravens second run in the fourth after he reached
with a single and advanced to third on a Hart single.
Franklin Pierce added another insurance run in the seventh as
Shea reached on an infield single and later scored on a sacrifice fly
from junior All-American Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Oxford
Hills) after Chambers moved him to third with an single
through the right side. Franklin Pierce (33-9, 18-5 NE-10) and Saint Anselm (19-21, 11-10 NE-10) complete their two-game midweek series on Thursday at Dr. Pappas Field at 3:30 p.m. The Ravens also host Pace University tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. |
