Franklin Pierce RINDGE,
N.H. (April 12, 2006) –
Franklin Pierce, ranked 18th in this week’s National
Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II poll and
22nd in Collegiate Baseball magazine’s poll,
rebounded from Tuesday’s tough loss at UMass Lowell with a 6-1
victory over Merrimack College in Northeast-10 Conference baseball
action at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field this afternoon.
Junior right-hander Arric Mather (Danville, N.H./Winnacunnet)
struck out a career-high 14 Merrimack batters over eight innings to
pick up his fifth win of the season (5-1). He yielded just the one
earned run, while scattering five hits and a walk. Junior Nate
Berberian (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin) closed the game out
with a perfect ninth.
Senior All-American Bryan Duplissie (East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock
Regional) led the Ravens offense as he hit 3-for-4 with a
stolen base and three RBI. Senior Mike Chambers (Londonderry,
N.H./Londonderry) was 2-4 with an RBI and runs scored, while
sophomore Matt Anderson (Medford, Mass./Medford) hit 1-4
with an RBI.
Freshman Jeff Bercume (Worcester, Mass./St. John’s of
Shrewsbury) led Merrimack as he hit 3-for-4 with a pair of
doubles and an RBI. Freshman Bob McCarthy (Chelmsford,
Mass./Burlington) was 1-3 with a run scored. Junior Brian DeMasse (Reading, Mass./Reading) took the loss (2-3), yielding six runs, three earned, on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Junior Eric Malinowski (Newington, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) was perfect in two innings of relief.
Franklin
Pierce took advantage of two Merrimack errors in the first for three
unearned runs, marking the 23rd time in 31 games this
season the Ravens have scored in their first at bat. Senior Elliott
Shea (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant) reached on an error to lead off
the inning, stole second and then scored on an RBI single from
Chambers. Junior All-American Garrett Olson (Norway,
Maine/Oxford Hills) reached and advanced to second on a
dropped fly ball to second, before Duplissie followed with a two-run
single to left center.
The Ravens added a single run in the third after DeMasse
retired the first two batters of the inning, as Olson doubled and
scored when Duplissie singled. Franklin Pierce added another run in
the fourth as Pennell led off with a walk, stole second, and later
scored on an Anderson single just past the Merrimack third baseman.
Merrimack scored its run in the fifth as McCarthy led off with
a bloop single down the rightfield line and later scored on a two-out
single from Bercume. The Ravens rounded out the scoring in the sixth
as Shea singled with two out and advanced to third on a Chambers
single. Chambers then drew a pickoff throw from DeMasse, and Shea to
scored before Chambers was tagged for the third out of the inning. Franklin Pierce (23-8, 8-4 NE-10) is back in action tomorrow when it hosts No. 30 UMass Lowell in a key Conference contest at 3:30 p.m. Merrimack (9-15, 5-8 NE-10) visits Assumption College tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. |
