Franklin Pierce Explodes RINDGE,
N.H. (April 30, 2006) –
Franklin Pierce, ranked 13th in this week’s National
Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll and 16th
in Collegiate Baseball magazine’s Division II coaches poll,
rolled to a 13-2 victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10
Conference baseball action at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field this
afternoon. Franklin Pierce, winners of nine of ten, completes the three-game weekend series sweep of Assumption with today’s win. The Ravens were led by junior Shane Presutti (Southbridge, Mass./Southbridge), who improved his record to a perfect 9-0 this season with seven scoreless innings to extend his school-record shutout streak to 26 innings. He scattered six hits and four walks, while striking out nine, to move within a win of the program’s single-season record.
Senior
All-American Bryan
Duplissie (East Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock Regional)
led the Ravens offense, which staked out a 9-0 lead after three
innings as he hit 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Freshman Scott
Savastano (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North)
was 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, while junior Vinny
Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty)
finished 3-3 with a stolen base and two RBI. Senior Elliot
Shea (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant)
chipped in with three RBI.
Freshman Mike
Baillargeon (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name)
paced Assumption as he hit 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI.
Sophomore Brian
Quaglieri (Shrewsbury, Mass./St. John’s)
was 1-2 in a reserve role, while senior Tyler
Vivian (Ashland, Mass./Marian)
finished 1-1 with a pair of walks. Sophomore Rory Ahern (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) took the loss for the Greyhounds (2-7), allowing nine earned runs on seven hits and three walks with a strikeout over three innings.
Franklin
Pierce scored all the runs they would need with five in the first,
loading the bases before Assumption recorded an out. Duplissie opened
things with an RBI single, before Savastano and Pennell each added two
run singles. The Ravens broke the game open with four more in the
third. Senior Randy
Fenton (Worcester, Mass./Doherty)
drew a bases-loaded walk, before Shea cleared the bases with a
three-run double.
Duplissie’s two-run double scored two more runs for Franklin
Pierce in the seventh, before the Ravens added two more in the eight
to cap their scoring on the day. Assumption got on the board with a
pair in the ninth as Baillargeon collected a two-run double with two
outs.
Franklin Pierce (38-10, 23-6 NE-10) is back in action tomorrow
when it makes up an earlier rainout at Southern New Hampshire
University at 2 p.m. Assumption (9-32, 6-20 NE-10) visits the College
of the Holy Cross for a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday beginning
at 6 p.m. |
