Saint
Anselm Buries MANCHESTER,
N.H. (April 15, 2004) –
Holding a 2-1 lead, Saint Anselm College scored four runs in the bottom
of the eighth inning to close out a 6-1 victory over Franklin Pierce,
ranked eighth in this week’s National Collegiate Baseball Writers
Association (NCBWA) Division II Northeast Region poll, in Northeast-10
Conference baseball action at Sullivan Park this afternoon.
While the Saint Anselm bats broke the game open late, freshman
right-hander Ryan Williams (Lynnfield, Mass./St. John’s Prep)
held the Franklin Pierce offense in check in his complete game effort.
He yielded just the one earned run while scattering six hits (just two
over the final six innings) and four walks with six strikeouts,
stranding 13 Ravens on base. Junior Keith Beauregard (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) paced the Hawks offense as he hit 4-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Classmate Bill Curry (Canton, Mass./Xavarian) was 1-3 with a home run and two runs scored, while sophomore Anthony Modoono (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) finished 1-4 with two RBI.
Sophomore
Mike Chambers (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) accounted
for half of the Franklin Pierce hit total against Williams as he hit 3-5
with a double and stolen base. Classmate Elliott Shea (Jaffrey,
N.H./Conant) was 1-3 with a double and run scored.
Junior right-hander Bryan Borowski (Clarksburg,
Mass./Drury) suffered the loss (3-3) as he allowed four runs,
three earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts and no walks in
seven-plus innings of work.
Leading 2-1 entering the bottom of the eighth, Saint Anselm
chased Borowski with two singles to open the frame. After a walk to load
the bases, Modoono followed with a two-run single. Freshman Wayne
MacKay (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) singled up the middle to drive
in a run and classmate Tom Sheehan (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc Regional)
greeted the Ravens third pitcher of the inning with a sacrifice fly to
center to drive in the Hawks final run of the game.
Saint Anselm opened the scoring with a single run in the fourth
with Curry’s first home run of the season to lead off the frame. The
Hawks extended their lead to 2-0 in the sixth when Curry reached on a
Borowski error and scored on a Beauregard single through the right side
with one out.
Franklin Pierce cut the lead in half in the seventh. Shea belted
a one-out double to left, advanced to third on a Williams wild pitch,
and scored on senior Dante Blancarte’s (South Berwick,
Maine/Amesbury (Mass.)) ground out.
Franklin Pierce (13-16, 8-4 NE-10) returns tomorrow when it
travels to Assumption College for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
Tomorrow’s rescheduled home game with Assumption will be played on
Monday, April 26, at 3:30 p.m. Saint Anselm (13-15, 7-5 NE-10) hosts
