Pierce Polishes Off RINDGE,
N.H. (April 22, 2004) –
Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 6 in this week’s National Collegiate
Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Northeast Region poll,
finished off a three-game series sweep of Southern New Hampshire
University with a 19-5 triumph in Northeast-10 Conference baseball
action at Crystal Field this afternoon.
Franklin Pierce has now won a record nine-straight as well as 11
in a row at home dating back to last season. The Ravens posted
season-high run and hit totals in today’s victory. Five Ravens registered multiple hits on the afternoon, led by junior Eric Cavers (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) who finished 3-for-6 with a double, home run, three runs scored and three RBI. Sophomore Mike Chambers (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) was 3-6 with a double, while freshman Kim Hart (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) batted 2-4 with a double and three RBI. Classmate Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) hit 2-5 with an RBI and Vinny Pennell (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty) was 2-3 with three runs scored.
Freshman
Daniel Fournier (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) improved to
5-1 in his first collegiate season as he went the first five and allowed
five runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks with five
strikeouts. Redshirt freshman Matt Fisher (Athol, Mass./Athol)
went the final two and was perfect with five strikeouts.
Junior Chris Hart (Waterville, Maine/Waterville)
was the lone Southern New Hampshire batter with multiple hits as he was
2-3 with a run scored. Classmate Mike Bernard (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton)
was 1-3 with a run scored, while senior Jamie Rouleau (Barrington,
N.H./Dover) registered a double.
Senior Jason Paul (Henniker, N.H./John Stark)
suffered the loss (2-4) as he was touched for eight runs, just one
earned, on five hits and five walks with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
Southern New Hampshire took an early lead with a single run in
the second when junior John Babcock (Auburn, N.H./Pinkerton)
singled, advanced to third on consecutive Fournier balks, then scored on
a wild pitch.
Franklin Pierce answered with eight runs in the bottom of the
second. Hart and sophomore Randy Fenton (Worcester, Mass./Doherty)
both registered two-run singles to spark the rally as 12 Ravens went to
the plate in the inning. Franklin Pierce (22-16, 17-4 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday when it opens a huge weekend series with Stonehill College, ranked fourth in the region, at home with a doubleheader beginning at noon. Southern New Hampshire (15-17, 8-14 NE-10) visits Stonehill tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. |
