Olson
Named NE-10 RINDGE,
N.H. (May 19, 2004) –
Franklin Pierce third baseman Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Oxford
Hills) was named the Northeast-10 Conference Baseball Freshman
of the Week on Monday, in an announcement made the Conference office. Olson, who earned the award for a fourth time this spring, helped lead Franklin Pierce to its second ECAC Division II Baseball Championship in the last three years last week. Olson hit .500 (9-of-18) with five runs scored, a double, home run and three RBI to go with .722 slugging and .526 on-base percentages for the week. He was also flawless in the field, going error-free in 13 chances at third base.
Olson
registered a hit in his first six at-bats of the ECAC Championship,
including a perfect 5-for-5 with a stolen base, two runs scored and an
RBI in a 10-6 win over New Jersey Institute of Technology in the Ravens
first game. Was 2-5 with a double and RBI in game one of Franklin
Pierce’s three-game championship series with Wilmington (Del.)
College. He hit 2-4 with a homer, three runs scored and an RBI in the
Ravens championship deciding 14-2 win over the Wildcats.
Olson finished his first collegiate season ranked third on the
team with a .335 (65-194) batting average (9th NE-10), 40
runs scored (10th), six doubles, a triple, three home runs
and 24 RBI while starting all 55 games this spring. He also stole 12
bases (13 attempts), matched a program record as he was hit by a
team-high 15 pitches (3rd NE-10) and posted a .414 on-base
percentage (10th).
Franklin Pierce (32-23, 23-8 NE-10) rounded out its season ranked
fifth in the final NCAA Division II Northeast Region rankings, narrowly
missing out on a second-straight NCAA Tournament bid. The Ravens won
their second ECAC Division II Baseball Championship over the last three
years and matched the program record for overall victories set in 2003
and established a new record for conference wins. |
