Junior Keith Brouillard fired the second shutout of his career at Bentley on Saturday.

Franklin Pierce Blanks Bentley, 6-0
Brouillard fires first career shutout,
runs scoreless streak to 15.2 innings

WALTHAM, Mass. (April 9, 2004) – Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 7 in this week’s National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Northeast Region poll, rebounded from a disappointing loss yesterday with a 6-0 victory over Bentley College in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at DeFelice Field this afternoon.

Junior right-hander Keith Brouillard (Westport, Mass./Somerset) fired a seven-hit shutout with five strikeouts and a walk to run his record to 4-0 this spring. In pitching the second shutout of his career, Brouillard extended his scoreless inning streak to 15.2 innings, allowing just one run over his last 24.1 innings of work, with the lone run, unearned during that span.

Junior Eric Cavers registered a double and triple in a 3-for-5 afternoon.

The Ravens were still shaky in the field, committing four errors, but it was a far cry from the seven-error outing, which resulted in all four Bentley runs scoring unearned in yesterday’s 4-3 loss in ten innings. Franklin Pierce has not allowed an earned run in over its last 35.1 innings of play dating back to the first inning of last week’s 3-2 win at Merrimack College.

While Brouillard and the Franklin Pierce pitching staff continued to extend their impressive pitching streak, the Ravens put an end to Bentley junior Tim Bryant’s (Reading, Mass./Reading) school-record shutout streak at 20.2 innings when they opened the scoring with a single run in the third. Bryant suffered the loss as he yielded six runs, five earned, on 13 hits with three strikeouts and no walks in eight-plus innings of work.

Freshman Kim Hart (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) paced Franklin Pierce’s 14-hit attack, as he was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and RBI to go along with two stolen bases. Junior Eric Cavers (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) hit 3-5 in the leadoff spot with a double, triple and two runs scored, while freshman Garrett Olson (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) finished 2-5 with two runs scored.

Freshman Kim Hart was 4-for-4 with a double and two stolen bases.

Freshmen Steve Gath (Reading, Mass./Reading) and Tom Haugh (Andover, Mass./St. John’s Prep) each hit 2-4 to lead Bentley.

Cavers doubled to lead off the third inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Blancarte to open the scoring. After the Ravens added a single run in the fourth on Hart’s RBI single, they broke the game open with two runs in the eighth and ninth frames.

After Olson legged out an infield single with two away in the eighth, sophomore Randy Fenton (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) drove him in as he legged out a sun-aided homerun to left. Cavers led off the ninth with a triple and scored on a fielder’s choice. Blancarte stole second, then scored on a double from sophomore Mike Chambers (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry).

Brouillard retired nine of the last ten batters he faced to keep the Falcons off the scoreboard.

Franklin Pierce (11-15, 6-3 NE-10) and Bentley (7-11, 5-7 NE-10) round out their three-game series tomorrow in Rindge, N.H., in the Ravens home-opener.
