Three Ravens Earn
NE-10 Weekly Awards
Shank named NE-10 Pitcher of the Week
Dunn and Jones Freshmen of the Week in baseball and tennis
RINDGE, N.H. (March 11, 2002)
- Three Franklin Pierce University
student-athletes were honored
by the Northeast-10 Conference office this afternoon.
Shank
|
Junior Chris Shank (Westminster,
Mass./Oakmont Regional) was named the NE-10 Pitcher
of the Week, while third baseman Bear Dunn (Charlton,
Mass./Shepherd Hill) earned NE-10 Freshman of the
Week honors in baseball. Ryan Jones (Westfield, N.J./Westfield)
copped Freshman of the Week accolades in men’s tennis.
Shank made Franklin Pierce history
when the righthander fired the first season-opening no-hitter
to lead the Ravens to a 10-0 win over Framingham State College
at the 2002 Cape Cod Classic on Saturday. Shank struck out
11 and walked just two in the seven-inning contest.
The no-hitter was the first for an FP
pitcher since March 24, 2000, when former FP
lefthander
Justin Blood tossed a no-no against Cardinal Stritch University
in Fort Myers, Fla.
Shank’s 11 strikeouts moved him into
second place on FPC’s career strikeout list with 138, still
97 behind Blood for the career mark. The complete game was
the 12th of his career, also matching Blood for second place
all-time, and he also tied Blood and former lefthander John
Learson for the all-time lead with his 12th career victory
on Saturday.
Dunn
|
Dunn sparked the Franklin Pierce
offense as he batted .500 (5-10) with two doubles, two triples,
three runs scored and a team-best five RBIs in the first
three games of his collegiate career at the 2002 Cape Cod
Classic.
Dunn batted two-for-three with a
double, a triple and three RBIs to lead the Ravens to a
10-0 win over Framingham State in his collegiate debut.
He followed that up with a 2-2 performance, including a
double and a run scored, in FPC’s 7-1 win over Saint Michael’s
College. Dunn belted a two-run triple in the Ravens tough
13-9 loss to Keene State College on Sunday.
Jones opened the spring season with
two wins at No. 6 singles for the Franklin Pierce men’s
tennis team. Jones posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Chris Kantehener
of Green Mountain College in the Ravens 9-0 victory over
the Eagles on March 2. He added a 6-4, 6-0 victory over
Pace University’s Ross Charbonne in a tough 5-4 loss on
Saturday night.
Jones is currently 2-2 overall in
his first collegiate season at No. 6 singles and is 1-0
in Northeast-10 Conference play.
The FP
baseball team (2-1) returns
to action on Wednesday when it travels to Oakdale, N.Y.,
to face Dowling College in a non-conference battle at 3
p.m. The Ravens men’s tennis
team (2-2, 0-1 NE-10) travels to Manchester, N.H., on Thursday
to face NE-10 rival Saint Anselm College at 3 p.m.
