Grand Canyon Blanks FP
Twice to Sweep Twinbill
Brockman fires two-hit shutout to lead
Antelopes on game one Corley out duels Shank to lead GCU
in nightcap
PHOENIX, Ariz. (March 23, 2002)
- A pair of University of Arizona transfers posted shutouts
as Grand Canyon University swept a doubleheader with Franklin Pierce University
in non-conference baseball action at Brazell
Stadium today.
The Antelopes posted a 9-0 victory
in game one before posting a 5-0 decision in the nightcap.
Senior righthander David Brockman
fired a two-hit shutout to help lead Grand Canyon in game
one. The transfer from Arizona walked none and struck out
six in the complete-game effort. Brockman (6-1) was perfect
until FP
sophomore Dante Blancarte (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury)
looped a single into right-centerfield in the fifth inning.
Senior Mike Wojtkowski led the Antelopes
offense as he batted three-for-four with a double, a homer,
two runs scored and three RBIs. His two-run shot in the
fifth sparked a four-run inning as GCU broke a 4-0 game
open and he also finished just a triple shy of hitting for
the cycle.
Junior Greg Serrano hit 2-3 with
a double, two runs scored and an RBI, while senior Matt
Denny and sophomore Andy Lane each chipped in two hits.
FP
sophomore Matt Weagle (Charlton,
Mass./Shepherd Hill) suffered the loss (0-2) as
he yielded six earned runs on ten hits with two strikeouts
and three walks in four-plus innings of work.
In addition to Blancarte's single,
freshman Brandon Dooley (Lynn, Mass./Lynn English)
had the only other Ravens hit with a pinch-hit single in
the seventh.

In the nightcap, Grand
Canyon sophomore Klent Corley out-dueled Franklin Pierce
junior Chris Shank (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Regional)
for the victory.
Corley (4-2) tossed
a six-hit shutout with ten strikeouts and just two walks
in the seven-inning outing. Shank (2-1) suffered from lack
of run support as he allowed five runs, four earned, on
four hits with five strikeouts in the complete game effort.
He allowed just one run on one hit over the first five innings
before things unraveled in the sixth.
The Antelopes got
one run in the third inning as junior Travis Kaats was hit
by a pitch to leadoff the inning and later scored on a single
by senior Matt Denny.
GCU added four insurance
runs in the fourth as Joey Reiman laced an RBI single and
Greg Serrano ripped a two-run single. The fourth run came
as result of an FP
error.
FP
left four runners
on base, including three in scoring position for the game.
Junior Paul McAuliffe (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) and
freshman Eric Cavers (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills)
each hit 1-2 for the Ravens.
