9th-Inning Rally
Lifts Grand Canyon Past FPC, 8-7
Reiman double lifts Antelopes to victory
over inspired Ravens
PHOENIX, Ariz. (March 19, 2002)
- Grand Canyon University rallied from two runs down
in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Franklin Pierce College,
8-7, in non-conference baseball action at Brazell Stadium
tonight.
The Ravens had rallied with four
runs in the top of the eighth and looked to post an inspired
victory over Grand Canyon after senior captain Scott
Loiseau (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) left
the game after being beaned with a Ryan Bethel pitch in
the top of the seventh.
FP
starter Jon White (Medford,
Mass./Arlington Catholic) retired the first two
batters he face in the ninth, then walked Matt Denny, ending
a string of 13 batters retired. Trent Otis singled to put
runners on the corners, then White walked Chris Raymond
to load the bases.
Mike Wojtkowski followed with a two-run
single to knot the score at 7-7, then Joey Reiman laced
an RBI double for the gamewinner.
The Ravens got four runs in the eighth
as senior Eric Burney (Rockville, Conn./Rockville)
laced a bases-loaded double that emptied the bases,
followed by a single up the middle by sophomore Jason
Bourque (Wolfeboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional) that
scored Burney for a 7-5 FP
lead. Bourque entered the game
as a pinch runner for Loiseau after the pitch hit him. Loiseau
was playing in his school-record 133rd consecutive game.
White (1-1) suffered the loss, despite
a solid pitching performance. He allowed eight earned runs
on 11 hits with nine strikeouts and three walks in 8.2 innings
of work.
Senior reliever Ben Mitchell picked
up the win (2-2) as he allowed one earned run on two hits
in 1.1 innings of work.
Reiman hit three-for-five with a
homer, a double and three RBIs to lead the Grand Canyon
offense, while Otis was 3-5 with a double and two runs scored.
Wojtkowski had two hits and two RBIs.
Junior Mike Callahan (Worcester,
Mass./St. Peter Marian) was 3-4 with an RBI, while
Burney had the three-run double for Franklin Pierce.
FP
(3-3) returns to action tomorrow
afternoon when it faces the University of Northern Colorado
at 3 p.m. Grand Canyon (20-10) faces Northern Colorado on
Thursday at 9 p.m.
