Quill fires shutout and Grand Canyon
helped by three Ravens errors

PHOENIX, Ariz. (March 18, 2002)
- Sophomore righthander Mike Quill fired a six-hit shutout
to lead Grand Canyon University to a 6-0 win over Franklin Pierce University
in non-conference baseball action at Brazell
Stadium tonight.
Quill, a transfer from the University
of Arizona, was making his first start of the season as
he had posted a 0.64 earned run average in 14 relief innings
prior to tonight's game. He struck out seven Ravens a walked
four in the complete game effort.
Junior Chris Raymond led the Antelopes
offense with three hits. Senior Mike Wojtkowski and juniors
Joey Reiman and Justin Dehmer each added two singles and
an RBI apiece.

sophomore Matt Weagle (Charlton,
Mass./Shepherd Hill) suffered the loss as he allowed
six runs, just two earned, on eight hits with six strikeouts
and just one walk in six innings. Freshman A.J. Hatton (Hudson,
Mass./Hudson) tossed two innings of two-hit shutout baseball
in relief.
Junior Dan Close (Leominster,
Mass./Leominster) drilled three doubles to highlight
the FP
offense on the night. Freshman Eric Cavers
(Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) added two hits.
Senior shortstop Scott Loiseau
(Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) had his school-record
21-game hitting streak halted, while juniors Mike
Callahan (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) and
Paul McAuliffe (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) had 13 and 12 game
strings dating back to last season all snapped.
Grand Canyon got on the board in
the second inning as junior Chris Serrano reached on a Weagle
error, then came around to score on a wild pitch.
GCU added three more unearned runs
on the third inning as senior Matt Denny scored on a Wojtowski
sacrifice fly after reaching on a Dante Blancarte
(Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) miscue at first.
Serrano scored on an RBI single by
Dehmer and senior Trent Otis scored after a throwing error
by FP
freshman Bear Dunn (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd
Hill). Serrano added a sac fly in the fifth and
Wojtowski scored on a Reiman single to round out the Antelopes
scoring.
FP
(2-2) returns tomorrow afternoon
when it will face the University of Northern Colorado at
5 p.m., before face Grand Canyon (19-10) at 9 p.m.
