SAINT ROSE BASEBALL
DROPS A PAIR TO NE-10 RIVAL FRANKLIN PIERCE
ALBANY, N.Y (April 20, 2002)
-- The College of Saint Rose varsity baseball team dropped
a pair of Northeast-10 Conference games to visiting Franklin
Pierce today at Walker Field at Bleecker Stadium. The Golden
Knights (23-15/12-6 NE-10) fell 15-5 in the opener and dropped
the nightcap 18-10.
In the opener, junior designated
hitter Chris Burdo belted a solo home run in the first inning
that tied the game 1-1. The Ravens (18-13/11-7 NE-10) added
a run in the second before exploding for four more in the
third and five on top of that in the fourth to extend their
lead to 11-1.
Saint Rose freshman shortstop Paul
Greco then belted a three-run homer over the left field
fence in the bottom of the fourth, but Franklin Pierce added
two runs in both the fifth and eighth innings to thwart
any thought of a Saint Rose comeback.
Senior shortstop Scott Loiseau
(Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) went 4-for-6
with three RBI and a home run while junior designated hitter
Chris Shank (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Regional)
went 2-for-5 with two home runs for the Ravens. Junior center
fielder Paul McAuliffe (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) and
sophomore first baseman Dante Blancarte (Amesbury,
Mass./Amesbury) also homered for Franklin Pierce.
Meanwhile, junior right-hander Jon White (Medford,
Mass./Arlington Catholic) scattered five hits, allowed
just one earned run and fanned six in 7.0 innings of work
to go to 6-3 on the year.
The Golden Knights jumped to a 4-0
lead in the second inning of the finale when junior first
baseman Kevin Jette went yard with a solo shot before junior
shortstop Erik Hoover, freshman second baseman Josh Colafemina
and junior left fielder Jose Segura belted consecutive RBI
base hits.
An inning later, Loiseau and Blancarte
both answered with three-run home runs that put the Ravens
ahead 6-4. Franklin Pierce then pushed across 10 runs in
the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Hoover went 3-for-5 with four RBI
while Segura finished 3-for-6 with two RBI to lead the Golden
Knights. Junior second baseman Mike Callahan (Worcester,
Mass./St. Peter Marian) went 4-for-5 with four RBI
while Loiseau finished 3-for-6 with five RBI and a home
run to pace the Ravens.
The two clubs will conclude their
weekend series tomorrow with a noon doubleheader in Rindge,
NH.
