Pierce World University Games Update IZMIR, Turkey (August 16, 2005) - Franklin Pierce’s contingent at the 23rd World University Games in Turkey had mixed results this afternoon. Women’s Soccer All-Americans Sonya Hughes (Balbriggan, Ireland) and Laura Hislop (Belfast, Northern Ireland) saw their medal hopes come to an end as the Republic of Ireland suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to People’s Republic of China this afternoon. Both Hughes, who leads Ireland with three goals at the event, and Hislop (two goals) were in the starting lineup and played the full 90-minutes in the loss. Ireland was sent into the classification round with a goal from Jiang Shixiao in the 67th minute. Ireland next face Finland, who suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of France in another quarterfinal match
played earlier today, on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. (EDT). The winner of the Ireland/Finland match will play for fifth place at the Games, while the loser will play for seventh place, on Saturday. Tom Sadler (London, England/Farmington (N.H.) HS) made his first international start and netted three points, canning a three-pointer, in Great Britain’s 65-59 victory over Estonia in Classification Group P action this afternoon. Sadler, who has played in three of his team’s four games at the event, finished 1-for-2 from the field. Great Britain, who has compiled a 2-2 combined record (2-0 in the classification stage), will face Mexico in a battle between the two unbeaten teams in their classification group tomorrow at 4:45 a.m. (EDT). Mexico defeated Lebanon, 80-66, today. The
University Games, held every two years, are open to athletes between
the ages of 18 and 27 who are still studying or have graduated
within 12 months of the event. |
