IZMIR, Turkey. (August 12, 2005) – Three Franklin Pierce student-athletes are representing their countries at the 23rd World University Games being held over the next two weeks in Izmir, Turkey.

Franklin Pierce women’s soccer All-Americans Laura Hislop (Belfast, Northern Ireland) and Sonya Hughes (Balbriggan, Ireland) have led the Republic of Ireland to the top of the Group A standings after two matches in pool play, while Tom Sadler (London, England/Farmington (N.H.) HS) has earned a spot on Great Britain’s men’s basketball squad. The trio are the first from Franklin Pierce to ever compete at the prestigious event held every two years.

SONYA HUGHES

Today, Hughes netted a hat trick to lead Ireland to the top of the Group A standings with a 3-0 victory over host Turkey. She opened the scoring in the 60th minute, and then added insurance markers in the 90th and 93rd minutes. Ireland now have four points with one pool match remaining on Sunday against New Zealand at 11 a.m. (EDT). Ireland (1-0-1) leads both Turkey and New Zealand by a single point, with Chinese Taipei at the bottom of the group with a single point.

LAURA HISLOP

Hislop, who has also started both of Ireland’s matches so far, starred in her side’s 3-3 opening round draw with Chinese Taipei on Wednesday with two goals. She netted equalizers in both the 30th and 66th minutes for Ireland, but after Taipei scored in the 67th, Ireland needed an 83rd minute marker to salvage the single point.

TOM SADLER

Sadler did not see any action in Great Britain’s 96-91 opening round loss to Lithuania today. They are back in action tomorrow against Australia at 12:15 p.m. (EDT).

The University Games, held every two years, are open to athletes between the ages of 18 and 27 who are still studying or have graduated within 12 months of the event.
