Hislop,
Roma Honored RINDGE, N.H. (September 29, 2003) – Two Franklin Pierce soccer players were honored by the Northeast-10 Conference for their efforts for the Ravens last week. The announcement was made by the Conference office today.
Sophomore
forward Laura Hislop (Belfast, Northern Ireland) was
named the NE-10 Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for the
second-straight week and third time over the last four weeks. Senior
co-captain Domenico Roma (Windsor, Ontario/Ste. Annes)
was named the NE-10 Men’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week for the
second consecutive week.
Hislop led the Ravens to a 2-0 record as she totaled 15
points on six goals and three assists. She broke a program record
with 13 points in the Ravens 10-1 victory over Stonehill College on
Wednesday. She surpassed the previous single-match record of 12
points set by three-time All-American Pauliina Miettinen, who
totaled five goals and two assists, in an 11-0 victory over
University at Albany on September 8, 1998.
Hislop netted the Ravens first five goals of the match in a
24-minute span around halftime against Stonehill to match the
program’s single-game goals record set by 1992 Player of the Year
Ewa Bergsten against Bentley in 1992 and tied three previous times,
including twice by Miettinen in 1998. Hislop also dished three
assists to finish off her record-setting performance. She rounded
out the week with a goal in Saturday’s 4-0 win at American
International College.
Hislop leads the Northeast-10 with 41 points (4.56 per
match), 15 goals (1.67) and 11 assists (1.22). She has played a role
in 26 of the Ravens 44 goals and has tallied multiple points in six
of the Ravens nine matches this fall. The Franklin Pierce women (8-1, 7-0 NE-10), which moved up two spots to No. 4 in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, returns to action on Wednesday for a key Conference battle with New England Region implications as it travels to North Andover, Mass., to face No. 10 Merrimack College at 3:30 p.m. The two teams enter the match ranked 1-2 in the New England Region rankings and tied for first place in the Northeast-10 with 7-0 records.
Roma
led the Franklin Pierce men to a 1-0 victory over Le Moyne College,
ranked ninth in the New England Region, on Saturday. He made a
season-high eight saves to preserve the one-goal victory and post
his second shutout of the season.
Roma has yet to yield a goal in 273:45 of action this season
despite missing five of the Ravens nine matches after suffering an
injury in their season-opener against the University of Bridgeport.
He is currently 3-0 on the season with 14 saves (3.5 per match) and
has posted 238 shutout minutes since returning from his injury three
matches ago.
Roma currently boasts a 1.12 career goals against average in
his third season at Franklin Pierce which is currently good for
first all-time at the College. His .781 career save percentage ranks
second all-time and he ranks fifth with ten career shutouts. The Franklin Pierce men (5-3-1, 5-0 NE-10), ranked No. 16 in this week’s NSCAA/adidas Division II poll, returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts the University of New Haven for a non-conference battle at 3:30 p.m. The Ravens moved up one spot to No. 2 in this week’s NSCAA New England Regional poll. |
