Trio of Ravens Earn RINDGE, N.H. (September 7, 2004) - Three Franklin Pierce student-athletes were selected to receive weekly honors by the Northeast-10 Conference. The announcement of the awards was made by the Conference office this afternoon. Junior All-American Laura Hislop (Belfast, Northern Ireland) was named the Player of the Week in women's soccer, while junior Brandi Guertin (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) earned Goalkeeper of the Week accolades for field hockey. Freshman Jenna Mello (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) earned Goalkeeper of the Week honors for women's soccer.
Hislop earns her first Player of the Week selection of the season (seventh career) as she led the No. 1-ranked Ravens to a 2-0 start to their season last week with 11 points on four goals and three assists. She registered a goal and assist in Franklin Pierce's season-opening 3-0 win over No. 25 Texas A&M-Commerce on Monday. Hislop recorded eight points with her first hat trick of the season (sixth career) and two assists in Saturday's 6-1 win over Holy Family University. Hislop leads Franklin Pierce with four goals and three assists for 11 points through its first two games. She netted the match-winning goal in Saturday's win over Holy Family. With last week's efforts, Hislop moved into the top ten on the program's career scoring list with 96 points in 27 career games, while her 35 career goals are tied for ninth all-time and her 26 assists are tied for 13th.
Guertin was named Goalkeeper of the Week for the first time in her career. She was brilliant in net, leading the Ravens to a 2-1 victory over Merrimack in season-opening Northeast-10 action. The junior turned in a nine save effort, shutting out the Warriors in the second half. Guertin is one of the most successful goalkeepers in the program's history, ranking first in career goals against average (1.53), second in career shutouts (5) and third in career save percentage (.853).
Mello picked up the first Goalkeeper of the Week award of her young career as she posted a shutout of No. 25 Texas A&M-Commerce in her collegiate debut last week. She was called on to make one save in the 3-0 Ravens victory. The Franklin Pierce field hockey team (1-0, 1-0 NE-10) is back in action tonight when it faces Bentley College, the preseason favorites in the NE-10 preseason coaches' poll, at 7 p.m. The women's soccer team (2-0) opens its Northeast-10 schedule tomorrow night at Southern Connecticut State University, ranked fifth in the New England Region, at 7 p.m.
