Pierce Pair Earn NE-10 Honors RINDGE,
N.H. (May 3, 2004) –
A pair of Franklin Pierce student-athletes have received weekly awards
from the Northeast-10 Conference office this week. Junior catcher Eric Cavers (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) was selected as NE-10 Player of the Week in baseball for the second-straight week, while freshman Matt Cloutier (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) was named NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Week in men’s lacrosse.
Cavers,
who earns his fourth career Player of the Week award, led the Franklin
Pierce baseball team with a .474 (9-19) batting average with eight
runs scored, two doubles, two home runs, two stolen bases and six RBI
in five games played last week. He also slugged .895 and posted a .545
on-base percentage.
Cavers missed the Ravens first two games of the week (both
losses) due to an injury, but returned for their doubleheader split
with No. 30 Saint Anselm College on Friday and hit a combined 4-for-7
with a double, home run and three RBI. In the Ravens three-game
weekend series with College of Saint Rose, he hit a combined .417
(5-12) with six runs scored, a double, homer, two steals and three
RBI.
Cavers leads the Northeast-10 with a .399 (69-173) batting
average, .653 slugging and .483 on-base percentage, 51 runs scored and
69 hits this season. He also ranks among NE-10 leaders in RBI (35),
doubles (15), triples (4), home runs (7), walks (26) and stolen bases
(18).
A second-team All-Conference selection as a sophomore, Cavers
holds career records at the College with 42 doubles and 53 stolen
bases and also ranks among career leaders with 143 games played (6th),
182 hits (5th), 131 runs scored (3rd), seven
triples (3rd), 15 home runs (6th) and 94 RBI (9th). Franklin Pierce (28-20, 23-8 NE-10), ranked No. 4 in this week’s National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Northeast Region poll, returns to action on Friday when it opens play in the double-elimination portion of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass. The Ravens have clinched a first-round bye and could still claim their first NE-10 Regular Season title and top seed in the tournament, pending the result of Saint Anselm College’s doubleheader with Assumption College on Tuesday.
Cloutier
earns his first NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Week honor after earning
Freshman of the Week accolades earlier in the season. He averaged 18.3
saves in three games for the Ravens last week. Cloutier posted 18
stops to preserve a two-goal victory over Green Mountain College on
Monday and saved 20 of the 29 shots he faced against Assumption
College on Wednesday. He rounded out the week with 17 saves against
No. 6-ranked Bryant College on Saturday.
Cloutier has played a big role in the Ravens collecting a
program-record three wins this spring. He is averaging 15.0 saves per
game this season to go with a 15.25 goals against and .533
save-percentage. Franklin Pierce rounded out its season with Saturday’s match against No. 6 Bryant College and posted a 3-12 record overall, 1-9 in the NE-10. |
