Franklin Pierce Announces Wednesday’s
NE-10 Tournament Soccer Times

Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams both to host NE-10 semifinal matches

RINDGE, N.H. (October 31, 2005) – Franklin Pierce and the Northeast-10 Conference have announced the times for Wednesday’s NE-10 men’s and women’s soccer tournament semifinal matches.

            The top-seeded Franklin Pierce women (14-1-2, 12-1-1 NE-10) will host fourth-seeded Merrimack College (14-4-1, 9-4-1 NE-10) Wednesday at 3 p.m. The top-seeded Franklin Pierce men (13-4-3, 10-1-2 NE-10) will host fifth-seeded UMass Lowell (10-5-3, 8-4-1 NE-10) in the second match of the mid-week doubleheader at 7 p.m.

Sophomore Jenna Mello made two saves in the penalty shootout as the Ravens survived a scare from eighth-seeded Southern Connecticut State on Sunday.

The women, seeking their sixth-straight NE-10 Tournament title, narrowly advanced in Sunday’s quarterfinal against eighth-seeded Southern Connecticut State. The Ravens advanced 4-3 in a penalty shootout after 110-minutes of soccer failed to break a 1-1 draw. The Owls snapped Franklin Pierce’s 26-match home winning streak in postseason play.

Wednesday will mark the 28th meeting all-time between these two programs, the fifth in NE-10 Tournament play. Franklin Pierce posted a 3-2 comeback victory over Merrimack in the regular season meeting between the two clubs, erasing a 2-0 Warrior lead just 3:20 into the match. Senior All-American Laura Hislop (Belfast, Northern Ireland) led the comeback with two second-half goals, including the match winner with just 51-seconds remaining in regulation. The Ravens are 4-0 against Merrimack in the NE-10 Tournament.

The winner of Wednesday’s semifinal will advance to Sunday’s NE-10 Championship to face the winner of Wednesday’s other semifinal between sixth-seeded College of Saint Rose (11-3-4, 7-3-4 NE-10) and second-seeded Assumption College (14-2-3, 9-2-3 NE-10).

Freshman Raphael Guimaraes scored the lone goal in Sunday's quarterfinal win over eighth-seeded Southern New Hampshire.

The men, seeking their first NE-10 Tournament championship after claiming their first regular season title last week, reached the semifinals with a 1-0 decision over eighth-seeded Southern New Hampshire University in yesterday’s quarterfinal round. Freshman Raphael Guimaraes (Marlboro, Mass./Ashland) netted the lone goal of the match in the 74th minute.

Wednesday will mark the 22nd meeting all-time between Franklin Pierce and UMass Lowell, the third in NE-10 Tournament play. The River Hawks will seek revenge for a 7-0 setback to the Ravens in their regular season meeting just two weeks ago. Wednesday will also mark a rematch of the 2004 NE-10 Championship, which UML won, 6-5, in a penalty shootout after 110-minutes of scoreless soccer. Franklin Pierce is 1-0-1 against UML in NE-10 Tournament play.

The winner of the match will face the winner of Wednesday’s other semifinal match between seventh-seeded Bryant University (8-5-4, 6-4-3 NE-10) and third-seeded Le Moyne College (12-5-2, 9-3-1 NE-10) for the NE-10 Championship on Sunday.

Admission for Wednesday’s NE-10 Tournament doubleheader and any subsequent NE-10 Tournament matches at Franklin Pierce are free of charge.

All Franklin Pierce men's and women's NE-10 Tournament matches will be broadcast live by the College's radio station, WFPC-LP, 105.3 FM, as well as streamed over its athletics website, www.franklinpierce.edu /athletics.
