General Information and Requirements

Students may apply to enter in the Fall, Spring or Summer Sessions. Applicants are evaluated on an individual basis with the student's potential and seriousness of purpose of primary concern. The trend toward improved grades, more difficult course work and greater school involvement are weighed heavily in the student's behalf. Counselor support and supplementary recommendations are valued and are given special consideration. Class size and campus environment are such that SAT results are generally a less valid predictor of success at FP
than ongoing classroom achievement.

The College admits those secondary school graduates who have a sincere desire for higher education, have demonstrated ability to acquire this education, and have evidenced good citizenship. Admission is open to all qualified applicants without regard to race, religion, physical disability, or ethnic origin. Applications are processed on a rolling basis; there is no application deadline.

Candidates considered for admission to Franklin Pierce University
ordinarily must be graduates of an accredited secondary school unless qualified for early admission. Franklin Pierce University
supports the efforts of secondary school officials and governing bodies to have their schools achieve regional accredited status to provide reliable assurance of the quality of the educational preparation of its applicants for admission.

Each entering student must submit evidence of adequate preparation for college. Sixteen units of secondary school work are required of each candidate, and the preferred distribution is as follows:

Recommended High School Curriculum
English 4 credits
Mathematics 3 credits
Laboratory Sciences 2 credits
Social Sciences 2 credits
Electives 5 credits

Candidates deemed to have potential and motivation, yet not meeting all admission requirements, may be accepted provisionally.

Procedures for Admission

Applicants are considered on a rolling basis until the class is filled. While there is no specific deadline, students are encouraged to apply and have their transcripts and recommendations sent early in the senior year. Admission is open to all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, national and ethnic origin, or disability.

An application should be filed during the student’s senior year in high school; however, later applications will be considered if space is available. Students may enter in the Fall, Spring, or Summer. The formal application should be forwarded to the Office of Admissions. There is no application fee. Upon acceptance, a $200 deposit, which is credited toward tuition, will be requested. Written requests for deposit extensions until May 1 will be granted.

The application consists of the following documents and information:

1. The completed application form.

2. Official secondary school transcript.

3. Official transcript from each college attended.

4. Official secondary school recommendation (guidance counselor, principal, or teacher) is required in most cases.

5. Any student seeking admission to the College normally submits either the results of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT I) of the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) or the results of the American College Testing Program (ACT). Special consideration will be given to students who, for valid reasons, are unable to submit SAT or ACT scores. Information concerning the Scholastic Aptitude Test may be obtained by writing to the College Entrance Examination Board, P.O. Box 592, Princeton, NJ 08540. Information concerning the American College Testing Program may be obtained by writing to the American College Testing Program, P.O. Box 168, Iowa City, IA 52240.

6. A sample of the student’s writing or an essay.

7. An on-campus interview is recommended.

8. Foreign students must submit the Certification of Finances and an acceptable TOEFL score in addition to the above items and must demonstrate college-level English language ability. This ability is normally ascertained through the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). However, acceptable SAT or ACT scores may be substituted for the TOEFL.

Transfer Students & Veterans

Transfer students are welcome at Franklin Pierce College. Transfer students, including graduates of two-year colleges, are welcome to apply for entrance in the Fall, Spring, or Summer. The Admissions Office must be furnished with an official transcript from each college attended. Students who hold AA or AS degrees from accredited colleges will enter Franklin Pierce University
with junior standing. One semester at Franklin Pierce must be completed satisfactorily before the award of transfer credit becomes final. A complete policy statement regarding transfer credits is available from the Registrar. Students from Associate-level accredited colleges will receive transfer credit of up to 75 semester hours for grades of “C” or better.

Veterans are encouraged to apply to Franklin Pierce College. Recognition is given to CLEP general exams, USAFI courses and G.E.D. equivalency examinations. Financial aid and employment opportunities are available. The College participates in Project Ahead which allows service men and women to earn credit while on duty.

Advanced Standing & Early Admission

The College recognizes unusual secondary school accomplishment by means of advanced placement and credit for those who have taken especially enriched or accelerated courses before entering college.

Students may apply for advanced credit by taking Advanced Placement Courses, International Baccalaureate courses or the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and earning acceptable scores.

Applicants qualify for such credit by satisfactory achievement on the College Board Advanced Placement Tests and through the College-Level Examination Program. Further information may be obtained by writing to the College-Level Examination Program, College Entrance Examination Board, 888 Seventh Avenue, New York, NY 10019. (See Credit Policies for limits on CLEP credits.)

LEAP is designed to help students analyze the knowledge they have accumulated through non-credit classroom experience, work-related experience, and informal experience, such as community service or self-study skills. It is important to note that credit is not granted for the life experience itself, but rather for the learning that has resulted.

Through our Corporate LEAP program, the College will evaluate company-specific training for college credit. Several existing agreements include Delta Dental, Prescott Park, Sullivan and Cogliano. For more information on Corporate LEAP, please call our new Corporate Relations Division at 899-4351.

The Life Experience Advancement Program (LEAP) allows students to request credit for knowledge they have accumulated through non-collegiate classroom, work-related, or personal experiences. When college-level learning is demonstrated, credits may be applied toward graduation. Students prepare a Life Experience Portfolio which is evaluated by an interdisciplinary Life Experience Advancement Program Review Board. Students should contact the Registrar for information about application procedures. (See
Credit Policies for the maximum number of credits allowed through LEAP.)

Students may be granted early admission. Students who have completed their junior year in high school may apply to have the requirement of high school graduation waived. Normally students are expected to have strong school and family support for the Early Admission option and show maturity and positive motivation for selecting this option. Applicants wishing to be considered for early admission are asked to arrange for a personal interview.
