Dr. Zrzavy wins NHCUC Faculty of the Year award. New! Check out The Exchange, the weekly online newspaper by our journalism students.

Mass Communication is one of the fastest growing fields of inquiry to emerge in higher education in the past twenty years and ranks among the top three majors on the Rindge campus.

The purpose of the major in Mass Communication is to prepare students for entry into the job market immediately upon graduation or for further study in the field at the master's and doctoral degree levels.

Marlin Fitzwater
The Mass Comm. Department is housed in the Fitzwater Center for Communication, which is named after Marlin Fitzwater.
Apply for the Marlin Fitzwater Scholarship (PDF) (high school students considering any major may apply).

Our program of study places an equally high emphasis on academic accomplishment and practical professional expertise in the areas of journalism and media production; it also seeks to instill in students an understanding of the management and entrepreneurial skills that are required to succeed in an increasingly complex and fast-paced industry.

Major, Minor
Students can choose to major or minor in Mass Communication.

In addition to a comprehensive Department Core of Classes, the Department offers areas of concentration that allow students to gain special competencies in:
    Journalism
    Media Production
    Media Studies

In Mass Communication, students find a dynamic, competitive atmosphere, room for artistic expression, small class sizes, and close interaction with faculty. We look forward to welcoming you in one of our classes.

Links with Other Departments
In conjunction with other departments MC also offers coursework leading to interdisciplinary majors in such areas as Computer Information Technology, American Studies, Arts Management, as well as an interdisciplinary Women's Leadership Certificate.

"The Mass Comm department has great networking opportunities not only through professors like Joe Castiglione (Red Sox radio broadcaster), Jeffrey Salgo (Director/Producer at CBS in NY City), and Jim O'Connell (Director/Producer at NBC in Providence, RI), but also through alumni as well. In this my junior year alone, I've already met and networked with two FP
Mass Comm alums who work at ESPN (my dream employer)."
