| A letter to CIT
Professors:
Greetings sir,
Hopefully it hasn't been
long enough for you to forget about me.
Much thanks to your recommendation, I have been given a
great position with the US Peace Corps, and I am
currently in Africa as we speak. I am in a country
called Namibia, just north of South Africa on the side
of the Atlantic ocean. The country is very beautiful,
diverse ecological aspects, and inspirational land
formations, but it's hot! I'm in an old mining town
called Tsumeb, which is considered the 'garden town' of
Namibia, everything is green, even the hills of oxidized
copper. I have been thoroughly enjoying myself, the
people are great and I love my job. The only problem I
have is that this country is an old apartheid state, it
used to be administered by South Africa. Apartheid is an
evil thing, and there are still many visible remnants of
it here; and to be honest, it makes me sick. I'm trying
to do everything I can do prove to people here that not
all white people are evil.
Aside from that tangent, I've been placed at a teachers
resource center, which is a place for teachers to come
and get some continuing education, unfortunately it is
grossly underutilized. Until the time I will be training
teachers, I've been training community members on basic
computer skills, things like Microsoft Office, Internet
use, email, etc. It is most enjoyable. I have also been
working closely with the Namibian government,
specifically the Ministry of Education; I have been
fixing computers for them, as well as doing some network
troubleshooting, soon I will also be setting up a
database server for them, thusly utilizing the knowledge
you have imparted unto me.
I want to take this time to say thank you for empowering
me with education, which I am now using to empower
others, I must go now, there is a severe computer
shortage here, and a university student needs to use
mine.
Thanks again sir...
