English Department

The English Department at Franklin Pierce University
invites students to participate in the rich heritage of the written word. Our curriculum is grounded in the study of the great literature of the past, including Chaucer, Shakespeare, the English Romantics, and major figures in the American tradition. At the same time, it is open to new currents of expression: to the voices of a Toni Morrison and an Amy Tan, a Salman Rushdie and an Anne Rice; to the literatures of multicultural America, the postcolonial world, and popular culture. In addition, the Department offers an array of opportunities for students to learn the craft of writing, both creative and technical. We aim to cultivate in our students a love of reading and writing, of literature and language. We also aim to provide them with the practical skills, the flexibility of mind, and the breadth of perspective needed to succeed in a wide range of career fields (see "Careers" statement below), and to thrive in a rapidly changing, morally challenging world.

CURRICULUM

Requirements for a Major in English include a 15-credit Core sequence and one of three possible tracks: a Literature Track of 24 credits, a Writing Track of 21 credits, and a Graduate Studies Track of 27 credits (which includes a recommendation of four semesters of a foreign language).

A Minor in English requires the completion of 18 credits of literature courses. A Minor in Creative Writing requires 18 credits of writing courses. A Creative Writing Concentration (likewise 18 credits) may be pursued within the English Major.
