Teacher Education Programs

Our Department:
Teacher Education programs are offered in Elementary Education, Art Education, Biology Education, English Education, Mathematics Education and Social Science Education. Interested candidates apply for admission to a certification program after completing 12 credits at the College. In addition to the certification program students must complete an academic major (acceptable majors below). Our program provides select students with small class size and individualized attention. Education faculty work closely with certification students throughout their FP experience.

Our Program:
The education program features a close relationship with an Education Advisor. Included in program are classes covering learning theory, educational practice, pedagogy, literacy, and special needs. Emphasized in the certification program are several field experience activities that culminate with a semester long Student Teaching assignment in a local school during the senior year.

The Education Program features two active student clubs, the Secondary Education Club and the Elementary Education Club, that encourage student participation in education related activities. Collaboratives established with neighboring public schools provide students with a wide variety of urban, suburban, and rural schools for field experiences. Graduates of the Education Program earn a state approved teaching certificate.

Acceptable Majors in Elementary Education:
Elementary education students must major in one of the following fields: Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, or the Fine Arts. American Studies is encouraged as a major for elementary education since it develops knowledge in several key areas.

Acceptable Majors in Secondary Education:
Art Education and Secondary English students must major in the field in which they are being certified. Students seeking certification in Biology can major in Biology or Environmental Science. Students seeking certification in Social Science (social studies) can major in History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology or Anthropology. The most desired path for both of these areas is History for Social Science education and Biology for Biology education. Students not majoring in the direct content area will need to take additional courses beyond their major in order to develop the breadth of knowledge needed for certification.
