CRIMINAL JUSTICE Welcome to our rapidly growing and dynamic Criminal Justice Department. The integrated course work is organized around careers in law enforcement, corrections, and court work. Our program of criminal justice study is also deeply rooted in the liberal arts. The faculty goal is to produce graduates who enter the criminal justice field or graduate school with an appreciation of gender, religious, racial, cultural and ethnic differences, and an ability to think critically and follow ethical standards. We want our students to be inquisitive and to work towards constructive change. The police on the street and in the neighborhood need these skills and attitudes to best relate to community residents and to be proactive in crime prevention. Correctional officers and counselors need to be sensitive to issues of diversity so they can intelligently deal with prison gangs and individual inmate needs. Court officers, such as probation officers or court mediators, also need to understand how family needs and dynamics differ according to religious, racial or ethnic affiliation.
